I understand the need to shoot the messenger but...

I am not:

The owner, the manager, the shipping department, the delivery driver,the sales department, or out there making and packaging the dog treats.  I can not really help you, I just do a lot of paperwork and answer the phones.  Oh, but I am the one who delivers the (sometimes) bad news.  No the customer is not always right, sometimes you're very, very wrong.
